Stella Fingerless Gloves Crochet pattern featuring star stitch with ribbed cuff - small size free on blog, PDF available to purchase for women's sizes small, medium, large

About the Stella Fingerless Gloves

For the Stella set, I’ve been playing around with star stitches, and these gloves are no exception. They feature star stitch and hdc with a ribbed cuff, and they are worked bottom up. I love how each item in this accessories set has a slight variation in stitch pattern, so they coordinate, but they’re not completely identical. The gloves use standard star stitch as well as two variations, the big star and the little star. You can see a video below to learn how to do the star stitch!

Materials

I used a super soft baby alpaca yarn for this pattern. I love the softness and the slight halo of the Herriot yarn, but you can use any DK weight yarn for this pattern.

Sizing

These gloves are sized for women’s small (7″), medium (7.5″), and large (8″), with measurement taken around the four finger knuckles. The finished length is approximately 7.75″, but there are instructions to increase the length over the fingers, if desired.

Star Stitch Video Tutorial

For more information on how to crochet star stitch, including a photo tutorial, see this blog post. A quick tip – small star stitches are made by picking up one fewer loop (this stitch is also shown in the video above). Big stars are made by picking up one extra loop (so picking up loops in the next three stitches instead of just the next two like you would for a regular star stitch).

Stitches Used/Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch chain
  • st(s) stitch(es)
  • ss slip stitch
  • sc single crochet
  • blsc back loop only single crochet
  • hdc half double crochet
  • star star stitch
  • s-star small star stitch (pick up a loop in one fewer stitch for star)
  • b-star big star stitch (pick up a loop in one extra stitch for star)

Stella Gloves Free Pattern Size Small

Here, I’ve provided the pattern in size small for free. You can also purchase the printable PDF, which includes sizes Small, Medium, and Large (links below).

These gloves are worked from the bottom up. You will first form the cuff with crochet ribbing, then work up from the cuff edge. When you begin working on the main glove, the “right side” of the star stitches should be facing out (so you should be facing the outside of the glove when working star rows and the inside of the glove on hdc rows).

For hdc rows – when working hdc into star stitches, work into the eye of the star and the top of the star (2 hdc per star stitch)

ch1 for turns does not count as the first stitch

  • 1. Ribbing – ch9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (8sc)
  • 2. ch1, turn, blsc across (8sts)
  • 3. repeat 2 28 times for a total of 30 rows ribbing.
  • 4. Join to starting row with slip stitches to form cuff
  • 5. Main Body – ch1, working one stitch per row of ribbing along the edge of the cuff, hdc around, join (30sts)
  • 6. do not turn – star stitch around, join (15 stars)

  1. Hello thank you for the video on how to make the star stitch. Would it be possible to show how and where you join? from step 6 to completion? thanks in advance.

  2. thank you! I love this pattern.. so beautiful

  3. Whoops! I somehow managed to delete the whole “stitch abbreviations” section of this post! S-star is small star (pick up a loop in one fewer stitch). B-star is big star (pick up a loop in one extra stitch)

  4. what does it mean s-star? I understand star 4, but when the next part says s-star, star 7, s-star, I don’t know what the s-star means . Please help me . I love this pattern
    thanks

    1. S-star means small star which means you drop the last loop. So you will only have 5 loops on your hook. She gives the instructions for s-star and star and b- star which is an extra loop. Hope this helps
