What is Darn Good Yarn?

Darn Good Yarn was founded in 2008 and is – of course – a yarn shop. But how many yarn shops do you know that carry repurposed sari silk yarn or banana fiber yarn? (I’m not joking, this banana fiber yarn looks super interesting!). They have a host of unique, fun, and funky yarns to try out in a variety of fibers. Plus they do carry some yarns from other companies like Malabrigo.

Their mission and goals include sustainably sourcing materials, job growth for underserved populations, improving working conditions, and other “can totally get behind” motivations.

Not Just Darn Good Yarn

Confession time – I haven’t actually used any of their yarns, though I think they’re fun. Nope, what drew me to Darn Good Yarns in the first place is their yarn bowls. They have beautiful wooden yarn bowls, and recently I got totally suckered in and bought a kitty cat ceramic yarn bowl – because it’s a KITTY CAT! How could I resist? Isn’t it so cute?!

Darn Good Yarn also recently sent me these cute unicorn scissors and asked me to review them (yup, I paid for that yarn bowl, these scissors were freebies, but both of them are awesome, and I’m in no way required to say so). I love that the scissors hinge on the unicorn’s eyeball, and the plasma coating is awesome. But of course, the best part is that they’re small and sharp. What more could I ask for?! Now how to keep my kids from claiming them as their own — that’s a tough question!

So, if you haven’t tried them out, I highly encourage you to give Darn Good Yarn a try. And if you try that banana fiber or some recycled sari silk, let me know how it goes!
