Seaside Hat Crochet Pattern

The Seaside Hat is a companion to the Seaside Fingerless Gloves (which are also available as a free pattern!). This hat features spike stitch stripes and a double-thick crocheted ribbing band for extra warmth. It is sized for adult large, adult small, child, and toddler (sorry, no baby sizes…). Supplies

  • Worsted Weight wool yarn in 4 colors, approximately 20-30g/40-60y each. I used Vidalana Ambient Worsted from Knitcrate (50g/100y) for my sample hat, but any worsted weight yarn will do nicely!
  • Size H crochet hook – I love these Odyssey hooks from Furls Crochet!
  • Yarn/Tapestry Needle

Stitch Abbreviations

  • ch chain
  • st(s) stitch(es)
  • ss slip stitch
  • sc single crochet
  • blsc back loop only single crochet
  • hdc half double crochet
  • spk spike stitch
  • dc2tog double crochet two together

Gauge/Sizing

In pattern (alternating spike stitch rows and hdc rows), unstretched, 7 stitches and 6 rows = 2 inches. The fit on this hat is snug – if you prefer a looser fit, size up!

  • Adult large: 23″
  • Adult small: 21″
  • Child: 19″
  • Toddler (1-2yr): 17″

Pattern Notes

This hat is worked bottom up in joined rows, starting at the brim. The brim is worked first, then folded to create extra thickness before continuing with the hat.

Variation: You can use as many different colors of yarn as you’d like, but I recommend at least 2 to show off the spike stitches. The instructions are written with four colors in mind, but if you choose a different number of colors, you would just rotate through your colors in order whenever there is a color change.

ch2 counts as first hdc. Where pertinent, stitch counts are written as toddler (child, adult small, adult large).

Special Stitches

Spike Stitch: Work as for a normal hdc, except instead of inserting your hook into the next stitch as normal, you’ll insert your hook in the stitch on the row below and pull up a loop.

dc2tog: (yo, insert your hook in the next st and pull up a loop, yo and pull through two loops on your hook) twice, then yo and pull through all three loops on your hook.
